Smart Hustle Abroad gives youth the opportunity to connect entrepreneurship, culture, college exposure, creative industries, leadership, and local economies through real travel-based learning experiences.
Program Overview
Travel is a classroom. Culture is a teacher. Exposure is a pathway.
Smart Hustle Abroad is YEI’s travel-based entrepreneurship and exposure program. Youth explore new cities, cultures, campuses, industries, businesses, and communities while connecting what they see to entrepreneurship, leadership, creativity, and future opportunity.
Students learn how local economies work, how culture shapes business, how creative industries create income, and how travel can expand their vision of what is possible.
The program helps youth build confidence, independence, curiosity, leadership, and global awareness while developing real-world skills they can connect to college, careers, entrepreneurship, and life.
Why Travel-Based Learning
Young people cannot dream about futures they have never seen.
For many youth, travel creates powerful firsts: first flight, first passport, first college tour, first time seeing a new economy, first time imagining a future beyond their neighborhood, and first time understanding that their ideas can move in the world.
Smart Hustle Abroad turns those firsts into learning. Every trip connects exposure to reflection, business thinking, cultural awareness, career exploration, and youth leadership.

What Students Explore
Every destination becomes a business and leadership lesson.

Access Matters
Removing barriers is part of the program.
Smart Hustle Abroad helps youth access experiences that are often out of reach. This can include support with travel preparation, passports, packing guidance, cultural preparation, family communication, and understanding travel expectations.
The goal is not only to take youth somewhere new. The goal is to help them feel prepared, confident, responsible, and ready to step into new environments.

In Summer 2025, 11 students received passports and explored entrepreneurship, culture, sustainability, economics, and youth exchange in Cuba.

Summer 2025 Global Experience
Eleven students. First passports. One unforgettable trip to Cuba.
In Summer 2025, YEI took 11 students to Cuba through Smart Hustle Abroad. Students received passports, traveled internationally, explored Cuban culture, and connected entrepreneurship, history, creativity, and community through hands-on learning.
The experience included sessions with local women entrepreneurs, a conversation with a University of Havana economist, an eco-paper making workshop, cultural exchange with a youth group, and moments of joy that reminded students that connection can cross language, culture, and borders.

Students learned how to make eco-paper and connected sustainability, creativity, resourcefulness, and hands-on production.
DC Meets Cuba
Students connected with a Cuban youth group, shared culture, built friendships, and experienced the power of learning from peers.
Cupid Shuffle + Cuban Salsa
YEI students taught the DC Cupid Shuffle, and Cuban youth taught them Cuban salsa — a joyful exchange that needed no translation.
